Je suis toujours un peu sceptique face à ce genre d’exercice, mais il y a souvent de bonnes surprises. Peter Fehervari a choisi d’écrire une nouvelle consacrée aux Executioners. ===L’histoire du livre=== Dans les ruines d’un Chapitre autrefois noble, un Space Marine lutte entre une foi dévoyée et la mémoire d’une grandeur perdue. Quand l’art et la beauté deviennent des péchés. ===L’histoire avec un grand H=== Montaig conserve en secret un livre précieux, seul vestige sauvé de la Grande Purge du Chapitre, une époque où la beauté, l’art et les traditions de ses frères furent éradiqués au nom d’une nouvelle foi. Désormais, les Anges Resplendissants ne sont plus que les Anges Pénitents, prisonniers de l’influence du Martyr Incorruptible, le mystérieux prophète qui a changé le Chapitre à jamais. Ce dernier était apparu dix ans plus tôt, émergeant des eaux du fleuve Tristesse qui entoure leur forteresse, le Kanvolis. Montaig l’avait conduit au Chapelain Malvoisin, avec qui le Martyr eut une longue conversation, apportant de sombres révélations : l’Humanité était irrémédiablement corrompue, les Space Marines étaient les pires pécheurs, marqués par l’orgueil et la trahison, la seule voie de salut résidait dans la douleur, la pénitence et la certitude de la défaite. Séduits par son discours, les chapelains instaurèrent la Couronne d’Épines, un conseil doctrinal chargé de juger et condamner les frères. Les récalcitrants furent balayés. Même le Grand Bibliothécaire Athanazius et ses psykers, qui osèrent défier le Martyr, furent dénoncés et anéantis. Aujourd’hui, Montaig se voit confier le sort de Phelion, un jeune néophyte qu’il a formé. Ce dernier est accusé de péché : il a sculpté de délicates œuvres d’art, renouant avec l’héritage des Resplendissants. Mais dans la nouvelle foi, l’art est désormais considéré comme une vanité coupable. Conduit à son jugement, Phelion se voit offrir un choix funeste par la Couronne d’Épines : suivre le Chemin des Chaînes et devenir un servitor, ou affronter le Chemin des Épines, un rite impossible qui ne mène qu’à la mort. Montaig tente de le sauver, lui proposant de l’aider à fuir, voyant en lui la possible renaissance du Chapitre. Mais le jeune refuse et, pire encore, avoue s’être lui-même dénoncé, convaincu que sa passion pour l’art est un blasphème. Montaig essaie de le raisonner, mais le néophyte, prisonnier de la doctrine qui lui a été inculquée, accuse son maître de trahison et menace de le dénoncer. À cet instant, Montaig sent la Rage s’emparer de lui. Mais loin d’être noire, elle lui paraît brûlante, éclatante, presque lumineuse. Il frappe alors Phelion sans retenue, l’écrasant dans un accès de fureur meurtrière. Quand il reprend ses esprits, le corps du jeune gît sans vie. Montaig étouffe sa culpabilité sous un mensonge : il décidera de déclarer que le néophyte a tenté de fuir et qu’il l’a exécuté pour préserver l’honneur du Chapitre. ===Conclusion=== Peter Fehervari continue inlassablement à étoffer son « Dark Coil », le petit recoin de l’univers de Warhammer 40K où se déroulent toutes ses histoires. Cette nouvelle courte est bien écrite et se suffit à elle-même. Elle donne même envie d’aller découvrir ce qui est arrivé au Chapitre des Anges Resplendissants.</div>
